date number two and confusion reigns.

I woke up in Toronto after a great night out with Ben that involved great food.  great conversation and great beer.  a Tuesday night in Toronto busier than New Year’s Eve in Orangeville.  why go for the safe when you can live virtually anywhere in the world?  we are too safe.  too dull.  following dull rules made up by dull rodents.  some get out alive and thrive but most die slowly.  in pain.  alone.  once filled with hope but now waiting silently and alone for their world to end.  to put them out of their misery.  send them off to a better place but there is no better place.  just a grave underground and filled over with dirt.  left to rot.  left to decay.  collecting dirt.  collecting ice.  collecting snow.  but never visited by long lost friends.  long lost lovers.  long lost family members.  alone.  cold.

I woke up without a hangover somehow.  someway.  I put on my clothes and walked outside into the cold air.  the snowy streets.  a snowy day still filled with beautiful women.  young women.  vibrant women.  women filled with so much hope.  so much fire.  not beaten down by rules.  by parents.  by bosses.  women equal to men and knowing that they are equal to men.  an energy in the city that is unmatched outside of a city.  an energy that has life.  fire.  art.  soul.  it was 9am.  FIRE.  SOUL.  LOVE.  CITY.  LIFE.

I grabbed a coffee and read a book for an hour.  then I walked back to my car and drove up to my doctor’s appointment.  I was five minutes late…as usual.  I was greeted with a smile by Dr. Hamidi and she invited me to sit down on her couch in her office.  this was NOT a casting couch.  this was a couch filled with stories of broken lives.  broken dreams.  shattered hearts and shattered souls.  I was hoping that we were going to begin where we left off last week.  searching through my life trying to find the triggers for my unpredictable behaviour.  my charming and energetic demeanor masking severe sadness.  severe loss.  severe abandonment.  severe confusion.  everything severe.  the highs.  the lows.  the boredom.  the excitement.  the drinking.  the fucking.  the exercise.  the reading.  the barking.  the busy mind.  the shameful soul.

the doctor, instead, asked me how the meds worked.  what did I feel.  how did I feel.  I told her that my head was pounding all week.  my mind more scattered.  my body less still.  depression beginning to sink in.  frustration sinking in.  lost.  confused.  hoping but hope fading.  an absolutely phenomenal appointment last week.  an absolutely uninspiring appointment this week.  Dr. Hamidi contacted the rich company who owns Straterra (a stimulant drug for adhd) and asked for some samples.  the rich company agreed to send them but they first had to do a thorough background check on Dr. Hamidi.  so many bureaucrats.  so many rules.  so many desk clerks.  so many jobs in this world bringing about absolutely NOTHING to this world but the peasants NEVER questioning big business and big governments so the jobs continue to exist.  the ultra rich controlling the world and the ultra average allowing themselves to be controlled.  what a shitty system.

anyway, I left the uninspiring appointment uninspired and drove north up hwy 404 to meet Jack for some much needed inspiration and he delivered.  small talk quickly turning into positive and inspiring talk about business and working for yourself and challenging the status quo.  after an hour I left alive and drove across hwy 9 with a renewed optimism.  a renewed vigor.  I called Nicole to check in and she was NOT in a pleasant mood.  she had just picked up Rylee from school and Rylee was, once again, barking.  upset.  sad.  down.  a lingering pattern.  a troubling pattern.  a troubling pattern.  a tiresome pattern.  a great girl with so much love in her heart and so much fire in her soul is constantly upset.  constantly alone.  constantly sad.  a girl who, on the outside, is so cute.  so real.  so honest.  so loving.  so caring.  so smart.  so alive.  so energetic.  but on the inside is filled with anxiety.  worry.  fears.  sadness.  sensitivity.  loneliness.  so hard to watch.  so hard to see.  so hard to feel.  so hard to parent.  parenting is so fucking hard.  mental illness is so fucking draining.  what to do?  what to do?  what to do?  two parents doing their best but seemingly doing their worst.  “is life this hard for other’s?”  WHY?  WHY?  WHY?

after long winded talks and never ending discussions about mindset and “just focus on yourself” talks, I left the house to go to the gym.  a much needed bike ride.  sweating out all my angst.  all my frustration.  all my confusion.  I felt great.  alive.  free.  I drove home and attempted to go to bed with the rest of my family.  one beer and a sleeping pill later, I managed to fall asleep.  Rylee and Nicole fast asleep.  three hours later I was awake.  too hot.  too edgy.  I left our bed and went to the spare room.  tossed and turned for the rest of the night but managed to wake up fresh.  alive.  I ate some yogurt and strawberries and had ONE coffee.  trying desperately to get better.  to feel better.  to feel “normal.”  whatever normal is.  means.  Nicole drove Rylee to basketball practice and I listened to a Tim Ferris podcast on overcoming fears.  IT WAS INSPIRING.  INFORMATIVE.  “today is a new day.”  a good day.  set my intentions and GO.  Nicole came home and we chatted about life.  goals.  Rylee.  a positive talk.  another POSITIVE TALK.  so many “positive talks” in a relationship that has lasted almost fifteen years.  I am surprised we are still together.  so is she.  tired.  frustrated.  lost.  always lost.  always frustrated.  always having answers but the answers never working.  breathe.  allow.  breathe.  show compassion.  feel love.  karma?

Nicole soon left for her Grandma’s house and I was just about to leave for the gym and then head downtown when I got a call from the school.  Rylee jammed her thumb in basketball practice.  she needs me to bring her Advil.  FUCK!!! I quickly got ready and drove to her school.  when I arrived she was sitting in the office.  her hand covered with an ice bag.  she took off the ice and showed me her hand.  swollen.  red.  she was in pain.  real pain.  always in real pain.  injury prone.  accident prone.  already two broken wrists and two broken ankles.  chipped teeth.  a scar on her forehead.  WHY?  WHY IS SHE SO ACCIDENT PRONE???  anyway, I decided to take her out of school and drive her to Emerg.  she was talkative.  always talkative.  she was sore.  always sore.  we arrived at the “check in” and it was quiet.  miracles sometime do happen.  we gave all of our information to the “check in” woman and then sat down in the waiting area.  we waited to get called in.  as we waited we saw an older man pushing an older woman in a wheelchair.  they “checked in” and then sat down across from us.  Rylee was still talking.  still sore.  after ten minutes the man spoke to me.  “Do you know where I put this?”  he was pointing to his information sheet.  he had a very heavy Italian accent.  “I will take it in for you.”  I responded.  I grabbed his information sheet and put it in the pile of “check ins”.  I tried to speak with his wife but she didn’t say anything.  she just looked at me.  sad.  sullen.  “What’s wrong with your wife?”  I asked the man.  “Parkinson’s Disease.”  he responded.  “She has a very smart brain but she can’t talk.  she can’t walk.”  so sad.  I looked over at Rylee and she was beginning to cry.  so empathetic.  so amazingly beautiful.  I wish I could help her more.  The man went on to tell us that the doctors messed up originally and didn’t diagnose her with Parkinson’s.  a year later and she has really deteriorated.  “Can you sue the doctor?”  I asked.  The man smiled and said, “I have no money.  If I have money then yes.  But no money no sue.  I’m not rich.  the rich rule the world.  everyone else suffers.”  such clear words.  a clear human being.  a clear human being from Italy who moved here years ago for a better life but still gets fucked in the end.  the doctor has moved on with his rich life.  the Italian couple suffer in their’s.

we eventually made it in for an x-ray and then sat for an hour.  Rylee asking me a million questions.  “is that the tape for soft casts?  what is Parkinson’s Disease?  what is Cerebral Palsy?  Why is it taking so long?  I may not be able to practice on Saturday.  do you think I’ll need a cast?  what is that on the wall?  then she started reciting her speech to me.  a speech for school that is on Yoga.  Go Yoga to be precise.  I kept telling Rylee to take deep breaths.  we both laughed.  smiled.  her in pain.  me in frustration.  impatience.  an impatient man with an impatient wife and an impatient daughter.  anxiety?  adhd?  ocd?  hypomanic?  bipolar?  narcissistic?  just plain old depression?  everything is possible.  some are probable.  a family seemingly filled with mental disorders but why?  what did we do to deserve this?

the doctor came in and told Rylee that her hand is just sprained and to ice it and relax for the next three days.  Rylee seemed disappointed.  I think she wanted a cast the same way that I wanted casts when I was younger.  wanting attention.  always wanting attention.  narcissistic?  scared.  worried.  tired.  almost broken.  refuse to break.  I left the hospital with Rylee and we had a great lunch.  love.  such love.  tired.  so tired.

we finished lunch and drove home.  another shooting in the US.  twelve years old?  chaos.  the facebook debates on gun control begin.  they will never end.  never.  sad.  always so sad.

I AM A HUMAN.

MY WIFE IS A HUMAN.

MY DAUGHTER IS A HUMAN.

WE ARE ALL HUMAN BEINGS.

WE ALL STRUGGLE.

WE ALL LOVE.

WE ALL CRY.

WE ALL LAUGH.

WE ALL HOPE.

why is there so much anger and hatred in this world?

greed.  greed.  greed.

corporate greed.

sickening.

disgusting.

fake.

phony.

help?

please help.

hours later I walk upstairs and hear Rylee telling Nicole about the woman with Parkinson’s.
“it’s not fair Mom.  it’s just not fair.”

Rylee began to cry.  Nicole gave her a hug.  I watched with a smile.

life has flown by.

the saddest part about getting old is the notion or fact that I have now somewhat figured out life and what I need to do to thrive.  to be alive.  to drive.  to live life to it’s fullest.  to love and dream and play and scream.  to embrace everything that this beautiful world has to offer but my body is beginning to let me down.  I have a never ending supply of energy but my body is beginning to crumble after fifty years of use.  half of that time has been filled with abuse.  abuse to my mind.  my soul.  my body in for the ride but the ride has been filled with broken bones.  shattered dreams.  from torn ligaments in both ankles to torn ligaments in both wrists.  knee surgeries.  broken nose.  broken collarbone.  numerous concussions.  damaged eye.  tendinitis in my elbows and tendinitis in my Achilles heel.  broken fingers.  broken toes.  stitches all over my face.  and now I wait for the arthritis to settle in.  oh how I look forward to my next ten years.  next twenty years.  hopefully next thirty years.  my elder years when I can no longer calm my mind with exercise.  when I need to sit with my busy brain and heavy thoughts.  open heart.  open soul.  a man with an over abundance of energy and the knowledge and will to move forward and fulfill his life gets taken down by a washed up body.  FUCK ME!!!  how cruel life can be.  how amazing life can be.  life is beautiful in it’s simplicity.  good food.  good conversation.  good wine.  great friends.  connection always lacking but nobody to blame but myself.  mindfulness finally awakening but body deteriorating.  libido still strong.  balding.  married.  one daughter.  one man in a house with two women.  hormones.  emotions.  irrational behaviour.  not listening one minute.  too loud the next.  then loving.  smiling.  laughing.  am I crazy?  have I always been crazy but now through mindfulness I am realizing this?  is it me?  them?  you?  my Mom sits in her lonely house all alone.  my brother sits in his house surrounded by kids.  a wife.  Paul bernardo sits in a lonely jail cell.  karla homolka plays in parks in Quebec.  oj simpson is in vegas taking selfies.  he is supposedly close to finding the killers of his wife and her friend.  where is Kato Kaelin?  Judge Lance Ito?  Johnny Cochran dead.  Mark Fuhrman in hiding.  Bin Laden supposedly dead at sea but zero confirmation.  Larry Nasser sexually abuses over one hundred young girls but the masses more interested in the allegations against Harvey Weinstein, Woody Allen, Albert Schultz.  Donald trump still in power.  still trying to ruin the world.  still trying to pass laws to help his rich dull friends at the expense of the other 99%.  tweets filled with spelling mistakes and false bravado.  small penis syndrome.  orange face syndrome.  weird straw hair syndrome.  doug ford?  really?  the world is in chaos and my lower back is sore.  I need to go to bed but I still need to meditate.  never enough time in the day.  in the week.  in the month.  in the year.  in my life.

life moves by much too quickly.

Rylee is twelve.

Nicole is thirty-six.

My Dad died when he was thirty-six.

some kids get cancer.  why?

rules.  too many rules.

love.

life is so precious…

2018?

really?

life has flown by.

kids are born into this world so free.

I leave my house at 8am and grab a Starbuck’s for the long and boring drive into the city.  a drive filled with big trucks that try to penetrate my ass.  a drive filled with hypomanic ants weaving in and out of traffic trying to make it to their shitty low paying jobs that bosses with shitty suits control them and empower them at the same time.  a vicious combination that leads to frustration, despondency, and ultimately sitting on the shitty couch watching shitty tv while drinking shitty beer.  the good news is that change is available for those who choose.  some do.  many don’t.  then they pass this dull behaviour down to their kids and then they pass this behaviour down to their kids.  life?

I eventually make it down to the city.  to my doctor’s office.  my adhd doctor.  my first appointment with her.  I sit in the waiting room and think about my wife.  my daughter.  never ending battles and never ending solutions.  just another struggle to add to my already struggling life.  struggling wife.  struggling and awful one minute and then beautiful and loving the next.  is this me?  is this her?  is this the both of us?  is this her parents fault?  my parents fault?  and will we pass all of this excess shit and stress down to Rylee.  she doesn’t deserve any of it.  kids are born into this world so free.  so innocent.  so curious.  so real and so loving.  so trusting.  and then we fuck them up.  why?  I want answers.  I want answers now before we fuck her up for good.  sad.

Dr. Hamidi opens her office door and welcomes me into her office.  she is pretty.  she is attractive.  so much beauty in this world but the rules tell us to NOT acknowledge it.  FUCK THE RULES.  ALWAYS.  FUCK THE RULES.

“please take a seat.” she politely tells me.

I take a seat and begin talking.  we first start on why I am there.  then we talk about how and where I was diagnosed.  we then discuss my current marital status.  my current employment status.  all of the typical first date bullshit.  I was edgy but calm.  a constant battle within myself.  too many battles and not enough victories.  life?  life?  life?  LIVE LIFE TO IT’S FULLEST???

we, or rather I, continue to talk about ME.  my favourite topic.  I hide nothing as I have been seeing psychiatrists, psychologists, therapists, and psychotherapists my whole life.  some good.  some bad.  some effective.  many not.  is that me?  them?  a combination of me and them.  is this my Mom’s fault?  my Dad’s?  god’s?  is there a god?  if there is he NEVER answers my prayers.

anyway, I continue to talk.  Dr. Hamidi asks me to discuss my early childhood.  where I was born.  my upbringing.  early school years.  parents.  siblings.

I began to speak and as I spoke the memories were so clear.  so vivid.  I miss my childhood.  my friends.  my teachers.  sports.  the victories.  the losses.  so young.  so free.  so alive.  the doctor was engaged.  listening.  it was a clear description of my youth.  I was focused.  clear.  breathing.  then BOOM.  the tears began to flow and flow and flow as I discussed the night that my Dad did not come home.  the night that changed my life forever.  the night that changed my family’s life forever.  the night he lay face down on the gym floor while kids watched in shock.  horror.  what seemed like a prank by a man that was filled with pranks.  filled with life.  WAS NOT A PRANK.  he was dead.  brain hemorrhage.  FEBRUARY 17, 1978.  THIRTY-SIX YEARS OLD.  GONE.  FOREVER.

I cried and cried but the doctor encouraged me to keep going.  I kept going.  I discussed my Nana dying a month later.  another loss.  then I discussed the day that Dom and I came home from school to find an ambulance parked in our driveway.  Dom and I ran inside the house.  terrified.  terrified.  always terrified for the worst.  we ran upstairs to find the bathroom door locked with my Mom inside.  collapsed.  too many pills.  her friend, Annie, by her side.  trying to help.  the paramedics trying to calm me down.  Dom down.  trying to revive my Mom.  we sat and hoped for the best.  tears flowing more than ever.  Dr. Hamidi encouraged me to keep going.  she looked concerned.  empathetic.  loving.

“wow…these memories are very vivid for you.  very present.”  she said.

“yes…(crying…crying…crying).  yes they are.”

the tears subsided as I then discussed the aftermath.  my Mom taken away from us for a month.  the never ending barrage of babysitters.  the continued support of great friends and great family members.

the talk then turned to high school where I was filled with anxiety and fears on the inside but seemingly full of bravado and confidence on the outside.  I spoke about bullies and girls.  sports and failed grades.

we discussed my introduction to booze and how much of a saviour and game changer it was for me.  how I instantly felt confident again.  great again.  the center of attention again.  my anxiety was instantly cured.  but, as always, the good turns to bad very quickly and what was once a saviour soon became my nemesis.  blackouts and reckless behaviour on the weekends would lead to angst ridden Mondays where I hid from everyone and everything.  the ying and yang of my life.  soooooooo good and yet soooooo bad.  but this did not stop me.  I continued my reckless behaviour.  fun times.  crazy times.  unpredictable times.  center of attention.  still popular.  still great in sports.  a chameleon of epic proportions.  I could change my behaviour to match the situation.  if I hung out with the ‘stoners” then I was a “stoner.”  If I hung with the “preppies” then I was a “preppie.”  if I hung with the “jocks” then I was a “jock.”  it made life easier.  I was accepted.  loved.

BOOM.

hitchhiking home one night after lining up all night to get Bruce Springsteen tickets I was picked up by an old Greek man.  he asked where I lived and he drove me home.  but not before rubbing my penis.  pulling my penis out of my Ocean Pacific boardshorts and stroking my penis.  instant ejaculation and then instant anger on his part.  instant SHAME on my part.

the doctor was shocked.  mesmorized.  I continued.

the next few years of my life were filled with fights.  drunken nights.  arrests.  fucking girls.  and fucking girls.  and fucking girls.  the more the merrier.  I needed to prove to myself that I wasn’t gay so I needed to fuck.  and fuck I did.  at the time I thought that this was normal behaviour.  I thought that I was a horny young man that was good with women.

pause.

Dr. Hamidi took a deep breath.  she looked at me with such empathy and love that I began to cry again.  I cried.  and cried.  and cried.  “WHY?  WHY HAS MY LIFE BEEN SO MESSED UP?  I HAVE BEEN SEEING PSYCHIATRISTS FOR THIRTY YEARS AND NO CHANGE.  NO RESULTS.  WHY?”

I cried.

I cried.

I cried.

she gave me Kleenex and she gave me love.  real love.

“everything is so real for you.  so clear.”

“yes…that is why I can’t stand our society filled with such phoniness.  such fluff.  why do we have such fluffy stories on tv and fluffy movies?  I HATE IT!!!”

I continued to cry.  first appointment.  first date.  first start to the rest of my life…again.  there is always the first start to my life…again.  I hope this ends better than the last first starts.

hope.

hope.

hope.

LOVE.

LOVE.

LOVE.

I have a second date this Wednesday.

shitting and meditating.

I stay up too late and am now up too early.  the vicious cycle continues.  I drink my large cup of coffee and say goodbye to Rylee.  she is on her way to yoga…by herself.  this brings a big smile to my face but it also saddens me as Rylee is growing up much too fast and I still feel that I do not have a strong connection with her.  she is such a great kid filled with a big heart.  a smart kid.  a loving kid.  an energetic kid.  everyone who meets her is instantly drawn to her.  smitten by her.  engaged in conversation with her.  why not me?  what is wrong with me?  why can’t I break through and be close with her.  am I blocked emotionally?  I feel that I am filled with an overwhelming amount of emotions and an overwhelming amount of empathy and YET I cannot fully connect with my own daughter.  SHIT.

Rylee leaves for class and I put on The Smiths.  great “happy” music to start my day.  I finish my coffee and run to the toilet.  I run and then SIT.  SIT.  SIT.  this tests my patience tremendously.  I was once a young man who would run to the toilet and explode all of my previous days toxins into the toilet in mere seconds but now I am an old man who needs to sit for hours to get a fraction of my weeks toxins out of me and into the clear cold water below.  FRUSTRATED.  SWEATING.  CONSTIPATED.  BLOATED.  too many pills and too much booze has wreaked havoc on my inner system.  time for big changes.  but the big changes never come.  NEVER.  EVER.

the semi explosion finally comes but not before thoughts.  many thoughts as I always have so much time while I sit on the toilet to release.  I close my eyes and breathe deep breaths into my lower clogged up areas.  always a great start to the morning.  a deep meditation that brings up feelings of loss.  feelings of love.  feelings of family.  feelings of life.  feelings of great friendships and great people.  a world filled with love and filled with respect seemingly changing into a world being taken over by hatred.  greed.  rules that favour old rich white men.  rules that go against science and fact.  rules and laws being passed at the expense of our beautiful world and beautiful people.  sick people in power.  sickening fake smiles and sickening decayed hearts.  clogged arteries.  clogged with dollar bills.  and beautiful fake white teeth.  dentures and fake tans.  fake hair and fake promises.  SICK GREEDY MAGGOTS RUINING OUR BEAUTIFUL WORLD.

but then I go back to my loved ones.  my lost loved ones like my Dad.  Bessie.  Cal.  Nanny.  Nana.  too many people taken way too young.  life is so precious and yet so fragile.  human connection is needed more than ever as I sit in my basement and write.  removed from people.  removed from friends.  removed from family.  removed.  removed.  removed.  connect.  connect.  connect.  everyone too busy chasing material things and phony accolades.

good music.

good conversations.

good wine.

good friends.

love.

loss.

family.

CONNECT.

DON’T HIDE.

CONNECT.

LOVE.

LOVE.

LOVE.

hello?

I need more love in my life.

the world is not fair.  children are slaughtered.  children are raped.  children are starving to death.  cities are wiped out by tsunami’s and hurricanes.  there are murderers and rapists.  cannibals and sociopaths.  terrorist attacks seemingly daily.  mass shootings in the US seemingly daily.  deadly pollution fills the air.  oil spills in the oceans killing thousands of fish.  poor people in the US dying without healthcare.  needless wars filled with needless deaths.  wrongful convictions.  oj simpson is a free man even though he butchered his wife and her lover (possible lover).  Donald trump is the president of the united states of America even though he is a buffoon of epic proportions but his rich cronies love him and benefit off of his policies immensely.  his poor racist followers love him too even though he could give two fucks about them and is actually fucking them while he smiles at them.  a big orange faced pig with straw hair and a small shrivelled up penis.  FUCK HIM.  PIG.  SICK.  PHONY.  FAKE.  SAD.  BORE.  DULL.  DUMB.  PIG.  PIG.  PIG.

the world is not fair.

“we need more women directors?”

“we need more black stories directed by black men?”

wonder women.  SHIT.

life is not fair.

Hollywood is a business that owes NOTHING to NO ONE.  I HATE it.  but I do not watch it.  fluff is fluff whether it is directed by a women or a white man or a visible minority.

SHIT IS SHIT.  PERIOD.  SHIT FILMS BY DULL SHITTY PEOPLE.  WOMEN.  MEN.  BLACK.  WHITE.  FUCK THEM ALL.  FUCKING PHONIES.  SHIT IS SHIT.  REALIZE THAT WHILE YOUNG KIDS ARE BUTCHERED IN AFGHANISTAN AND EVEN YOUNGER KIDS ARE STARVING TO DEATH IN AFRICA.

WHINE.  WHINE.  WHINE.  WHINE ALL YOU WANT BUT WHO IS LISTENING?

HOLLYWOOD IS A JOKE.
